BT wanted to know who on the Mets deserves the most blame for their colossal disappointment of a season, and Sal wasted no time laying into the team's aging ace.
"It's Max Scherzer," Sal said. "For two years, he has killed this team. He ruined their season a year ago in Atlanta. All he had to do was win one stinking game after deGrom lost that Friday night…he gets tattooed. What happens in the Wild Card round? He gets tattooed.
"Then this year, one after another. Every time this guy has taken the mound in a big start, he has failed miserably."
Scherzer was knocked around in Saturday's loss to the Red Sox, which Sal says is the latest example of the future Hall of Famer flopping when the Mets need him most. From failing in big games to failing to hold leads, Sal has done a 180 on Scherzer since he signed with New York, and believes he has played the biggest role in ruining the 2023 Mets.
"Nobody in that rotation is more responsible for the Mets failures than Max Scherzer," Sal said. "Can you show up once?"
