Sal Licata was ready to throw in the towel on Max Scherzer, but over his last 25 innings of work, the future Hall of Famer has an ERA of 1.03 after turning in seven innings and allowing just one earned run on Thursday.

Given Scherzer’s recent resurgence following a brutal start to the season, Sal is ready to happily admit he was wrong.

“Boy, was I wrong,” Sal said. “And I’m happy to be wrong. But I want to apologize, because I knew better. Deep down, that’s why I love Max Scherzer. The guy is an animal. I should have never doubted him.”

One thing Sal never denied was the importance of Scherzer to the Mets in 2023, and now that the starting pitching has seemingly turned a corner in a three-game sweep of the rival Phillies, and Scherzer looking as strong as he has over his last four starts, hope is back for Sal when it comes to the outlook of his Mets.

“Their formula to win games, like they did a year ago, is to get good starting pitching,” Sal said. “The reason for concern for the Mets season was because I was skeptical of Max. I just thought to myself, ‘maybe this is it.’ It led me to think maybe Max Scherzer was never going to be Max again. If that was the case, the Mets would have no chance.

“Well, that is not the case, and the Mets do have a chance!”
