Sal: Do real fans stay until the very end of games?

Ben called in to Sal on his way home from the Mets game, proudly revealing that he stayed the whole game to see Pete Alonso's walk-off home run, and declared that those who left early simply don't understand the beauty of baseball, which doesn't have a clock that can be run down by a team holding a commanding lead.

Sal, as rabid a Mets fan as anybody, offered a counter, as weighing the beauty of baseball against the ugliness of traffic can be a difficult decision.

"Nobody, and especially yours truly, likes sitting in traffic," Sal said. "Especially after a game…people deal with traffic all day long. The last thing people want to do is sit in traffic after a game.

"To my core, I believe you should stay until the end. However, I've been to so many games, if they come back, I can hear it on the radio.  I'm not talking about a big game. I'm talking about a regular season game. This isn't even the Subway Series. You're talking about Mets/Rays in May when the Mets are under .500 and down 5-2 in the ninth. Those who left, you're kicking yourself. I can live with my decision. Probably some regret if I left that game, but I've seen enough. I can imagine what it would be like to be there."

But make no mistake, Sal does believe the real fans stay until the end, and that is how he will teach his kids when it's time to take them to the ballpark.

"When I start taking my daughter to games…I'm gonna teach her the right way," Sal said. "We stay until the end."
