The Mets failed to end their stretch without a series win on Monday, getting pummeled by the Nationals to settle for a series split.
New York hasn't won a series in a month, and for Sal, things are getting ugly.
"You look at what the Mets are doing, and it's a lot of nothing…it's been a mess," Sal said. "The Mets are awful. It's not about who they play, it's how they play. They're finishing a 4-9 stretch against some of the worst teams in baseball…it has been ugly."
The starting rotation appears to be stabilizing with Justin Verlander's arrival and Max Scherzer looking much better in his last start, but the Mets have to find a replacement for David Peterson, who was rocked again in Monday's start, while the back end of the rotation still deals with injuries.
"I never want to see David Peterson in a Mets uniform again," Sal said.
But what is most concerning to Sal is the look of the team, as costly mistakes generated by the Mets are a disturbing trend throughout this cold stretch.
"The thing that bothers me is that this team has been beating themselves," Sal said. "That is something they did not do at all last year…this year, it is the complete opposite."
