Sal: Mets 'gotta move on' from Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander

Sal Licata doesn't want to see the Mets hold a fire sale at the trade deadline, but unless something changes drastically in a short amount of time, he would look to move on from their high-priced aces.

"I don't like the idea of selling, especially this year for the Mets, but I think they gotta move on from Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander," Sal said. "I don't think they're gonna be able to. I don't think anybody's taking them on. I'm just tired of the team being built around that."

The hurdles of moving the two future Hall of Famers is their $43 million salaries, and their no-trade clauses, though MLB.com's Anthony DiComo recently reported that Scherzer would be open to waiving his no-trade clause if the Mets continue to sputter and the right situation arises.

If that scenario unfolds, Sal would be in favor of parting with the two aging aces, though not if it the other team involved refuses to take on a chunk of their salaries.

"I would look at it more as an opportunity to restructure, and if you did have a taker on Verlander and Scherzer, depending on how much you have to pay," Sal said. "I'm not paying Verlander $40 million to have him pitch somewhere else. Same thing with Scherzer."
