After Thursday’s loss to the Braves, Sal was ready to show several Mets players the door, and he made it known in another epic rant following the disastrous defeat in Atlanta.
“Drew Smith. You have to laugh at this point, because if you don’t laugh, you’re gonna cry,” Sal said. “Drew Smith, this is the guy we gotta see try and protect a big lead in a big spot? On a team with the highest payroll in baseball history, Drew Smith is the guy that’s in there for important outs?
“He sucks! Get him off the team, right along with Vogelbach! I’d offer to drive them myself, but I’m not wasting my time with these two guys. I don’t care how they get out of here, just get them out of here. I never want to see them again. Take Ottavino with you!”
So, Sal’s cut list includes Smith, Vogelbach, Ottavino, and one more reliever who served up the walk-off blast to Ozzie Albies.
“Tommy Hunter, he can go too!” Sal said. “Tommy Hunter, you expect he sucks, he shouldn’t be on the team. He’s an absolute last resort. When Tommy Hunter was walking in from the bullpen, I saw a white flag. I didn’t see tommy Hunter, I saw a white flag.”
