There was plenty to like about the Mets’ thrilling win over the Rays on Wednesday night, but their three heroic home runs masked some of the deficiencies that still remain.
For Sal, one of those glaring deficiencies is Adam Ottavino, who gave up a home run to Brandon Lowe to spoil the thrill of Mark Vientos going deep in his first game since being called up by the Mets.
It was the last straw for Sal, who wants Ottavino gone.
“Ottavino is part of the bad,” Sal said. “I really think the Mets need to move on from Ottavino. I know that sounds nuts, but I would look to move him at the trade deadline.
“Get him out of here. He can’t hold runners, he can’t pitch to lefties, he’s too predictable, it’s too fat of pitches, especially to lefties.”
Ottavino was one of the team’s best relievers last season, posting a 2.06 ERA in 65.2 innings of work. So far this season, he holds a 3.71 ERA, and while New York needs experienced arms in the back of the bullpen with Edwin Diaz out for the season, Sal says Ottavino isn’t the answer.
“He had a great year last year, but that was an aberration,” Sal said. “Ottavino is not that good. If you want to win games late, I know they’re without Diaz and need Ottavino, but he’s not that good. Enough of him.”
