The Mets' feel-good start to this week's critical series against the Braves was washed away quickly, as the Braves erased a 4-1 deficit to claim a 6-4 victory in Tuesday's series opener.
Reacting to the loss, Sal Licata said it showed you who the 2023 Mets are at this point in the season.
"The Mets are losers," Sal said. "There's just no other way to put it. "Until proven otherwise, the New York Mets are losers, and the Braves own them."
Some were mad at Daniel Vogelbach for his hitless night and three strikeouts, and others were upset with Buck Showalter for putting together a lineup with no Francisco Alvarez and Vogelbach batting fifth. But Sal's anger was directed elsewhere.
"They lost this game because Drew Smith, who, for some reason, the franchise is infatuated with, stinks," Sal said. "Drew Smith has never been good, and he never will be good. Enough of Drew Smith."
But, overall, Sal says the Mets just aren't a good team right now, regardless of their astronomical payroll.
"Bottom line is, the Mets just aren't that good," Sal said. "They're good compared to the crappy Mets teams before Cohen. But they're not that good when you compare them to the Dodgers and the Braves, and compared to their payroll…until proven otherwise. I'm not saying the season is over. I'm not even saying the series is over. You got Scherzer and Verlander now. The series is there for the taking."
