After the Mets swept the Phillies on Thursday, they moved to within 3.5 games of the division-leading Braves, who has stumbled a bit of late, losing six of their last 10 games.

Given how much better New York has looked this week, Sal wants to know why anyone would be worried about the Wild Card standings right now. It’s time to think a lot bigger. In fact, it has always been time for that, considering June just started.

“It just felt like after the first month plus that the Mets weren’t gonna make a run at the division. People started talking about the Wild Card standings,” Sal said. “Even I’m not that nuts. It was only May!

“Wild Card? Get out of here with that!”

The Mets are within striking distance of the division, and still don’t have some of their top veterans playing to their potential. If the likes of Francisco Lindor, Starling Marte, and Justin Verlander really get going, watch out.

“I didn’t think there was a chance the Mets were gonna be as good as the Braves, and yet here we are, just 3.5 games back,” Sal said. “The division is in play.

“We felt that way after the Tampa Bay series with the Mets, but even more so now.”
