The Mets gained another game in the NL East standings after taking care of business against the Nationals, and head home with a 3.5-game lead in the division with a massive five-game series against the second-place Braves on deck.
The upcoming series could either put the Mets firmly in first place with less than two months to go in the season, or give the defending champs a chance to take first place from New York, which has held the top spot nearly all season.
Sal is feeling good about the former.
"I've been confident about the Mets and the NL East all year losing, and it's about to get paid off, or I'm gonna look like a complete fool," Sal said.
"Marte back, McNeil back, May, deGrom, McCann, the additions they made, they actually have a DH in place now. I think the Mets are better, and I think this is the weekend that they send the message to Atlanta and start to pull away."
Just how confident is Sal in his Mets? He says New York can take at least four games this weekend at Citi Field, something Mets fans would certainly sign up for.
"They're already four up in the loss column," Sal said. "I think the Mets are gonna take four of five minimum, and really get this city behind them and excited about them, and feel good about them going into what we hope is a long postseason run."
