The Mets have lost their homegrown ace, an unfamiliar feeling for owner Steve Cohen, who has mainly only known big additions rather than painful losses in his relatively short time at the helm.
But Cohen, who has already made a name for himself as a big spender committed to winning, now must go on without Jacob deGrom, who signed a five-year, $185 million deal with the Rangers on Friday night.
In a statement to Andy Martino of SNY, Cohen wished deGrom the best in Texas.
"I wish him well," Cohen told Martino. "He has the right to choose his team. Now this team has to move on to the next thing."
That "next thing" could be Justin Verlander or Carlos Rodon, two aces that the Mets are reportedly targeting now that deGrom is out of the mix. Cohen and company will have plenty of work to do to fill their starting rotation, as Chris Bassitt and Taijuan Walker are also free agents, meaning three rotation arms from last season's group could be pitching elsewhere in 2023.
