Steve Cohen will not add at trade deadline if Mets playoff outlook doesn't change

The Mets are nearing the end of June 16.5 games back in the division and 8.5 games back of a playoff spot in the Wild Card race, and Steve Cohen told reporters on Wednesday that if the team's positioning in the standings doesn't improve by the trade deadline, don't expect him to be adding pieces.

"If I'm in this position, I'm not adding," Cohen said. "I think that would be silly. I would probably do very little."

With that in mind, Cohen did leave the previously unfathomable possibility of the Mets being sellers at this time next month if the team isn't able to go on a run.

"We don't have as much luxury of time as we had before," Cohen said. "We still have time…the season is not over. I'm preparing my management team for all possibilities. If we don't get better, we have decisions to make at the trade deadline. That's not my preferred end result, but I'm preparing all contingencies."

Could that mean trading Max Scherzer or Justin Verlander, and eating some of their salary like the Mets did with Eduardo Escobar this past weekend? Cohen says if it means replenishing the farm system, he's willing to eat the money.

"I consider the money spent," Cohen said. "So in that unfortunate circumstance, if I can find a way to improve our farm system, and that's the path we take, I'm willing to do it."
