Steve Somers talks retooled Mets with Keith McPherson: 'It is a win-now team'

The Mets are spending big, and they look to be in the mix for any big-name free agent or trade chip. No superstar looks to exist beyond Steve Cohen's budget, and fans are rejoicing at their long-suffering squad finally looking like a franchise that wants to win at any cost.

It is a welcomed sight for the beloved Steve Somers, who hopped on with Keith McPherson on Monday night to talk all things Mets, and the buzz around Queens as Opening Day nears.

"The Mets are gonna be so good," Steve said. "They're gonna be Town Fair Tire!"

Steve's nod to Town Fair Tire's jingle of "Nobody beats Town Fair Tire" might still be extreme given the competition in the National League, particularly in their own division with the defending champion Braves, who will have Ronald Acuna Jr. back in the fold, and have a shiny consolation prize in Matt Olson after allowing Freddie Freeman to walk. But it's clear nobody will beat the Mets when it comes to a bidding war, thanks to Cohen.

"It's hard for a Mets fan to believe that Steve Cohen is with the Mets and willing to spend more than he already has," Steve said. "Steve Cohen is willing to spend, and that's a good thing.

"It is a win-now team."

The Mets and their new-look front office have made it clear that the goal is to win a title, and quickly. There is still work to be done, but Steve believes his team has made enough of a jump to at least compete heavily for their first division title since 2015.

"The Mets ought to be at least co-favorites to win the NL East," Steve said. "Then again, winning the offseason on paper is one thing, and winning it on the field is another."
