Steven Matz was the latest 2020 New York Met to say goodbye when he was dealt to Toronto late Wednesday night…and then the latest 2020 New York Met to take to Twitter to send a farewell message to the fans in Queens.
“I’ll always be grateful to the Mets for the opportunity to play for my hometown team. Thank you to Mets fans for all your support throughout my time in NY. And thanks to all my teammates and coaches — I wish you all nothing but the best of luck moving forward!” Matz Tweeted Thursday night.
He soon followed up with another Tweet saying he was excited to join the Blue Jays…but as of the sending of the Tweets, his account still said “pitcher for the NY Mets.”
Matz, 29, grew up on Long Island and was drafted by the Mets in the second round in 2009 out of East Setauket’s Ward Melville High School.
He made his MLB debut in 2015 and went 31-41 with a 4.35 ERA in 112 games (107 starts) over six seasons, including an 0-5, 9.68 mark in nine games (six starts) in 2020.
