Tiki says Mark Vientos won't be Mets savior, veterans need to 'do their damn jobs'

The Mets have made the Mark Vientos call-up official, announcing that Luis Guillorme has been optioned to Triple-A as a corresponding move.

Many fans hope the arrival of the slugging prospect will inject some much-needed power and life into a struggling Mets lineup, but Tiki has a warning: there have already been multiple false prophets for New York this season, and Vientos is likely not going to be the exception.

“It’s almost like they’re waiting for someone to come ‘save them,’” Tiki said. “Before the season started, it was that. We lose deGrom, we’ll go get Verlander. He’ll save us. He gets hurt…Scherzer is jacked up, then it becomes, ‘We need some more hitting. We’ll bring up Brett Baty. He’ll be our savior.’

“Now we’re like ‘OK, we have no power, let’s bring up Mark Vientos.’”

Instead, Tiki said the solution to the team’s offensive woes is for their established veterans to simply wake up and start playing to the back of their baseball cards, like Francisco Lindor, Starling Marte, and Pete Alonso.

“It’s like they’re constantly seeking saviors instead of doing your damn jobs,” Tiki said. “You’re not gonna win that way.”

As for the veterans that have been struggling much longer, like Mark Canha and Daniel Vogelbach, Tiki would like to see youngsters like Vientos get their fair chance of proving themselves as the future of the franchise.

“You’re losing anyway,” Tiki said. “Get the kids out there and let them figure it out.”
