Buck Showalter, when asked if he would have done anything differently in the disastrous eighth inning that cost the Mets a win on Sunday, simply replied, "What else can we do?"
Showalter was citing the recent workload for some of the team's top bullpen arms, but Tiki sees it as a concerning lack of urgency for the leader of a team that is sliding out of the playoff picture.
"He is acting like June and this part of the regular season doesn't matter," Tiki said. "I'm not trying to kill him, but when you hear how he responds to things, and how this ineptitude has taken over this team…at this point, they're inventing ways to lose.
"It looked like little league baseball…when a team loses in the myriad of ways that the Mets lose, and afterwards, the manager says 'We put our guys in a position to win, what are we supposed to do?' What??"
Tiki says Showalter's seeming lack of emotion or urgency in his decisions and postgame interviews suggests that he simply isn't grasping, or is flat-out ignoring, the gravity of the team's situation at this point in the season.
"It feels like 'Eh, these games don't really matter,'" Tiki said. "They have six teams to jump before they get into the Wild Card conversation. How is this in any way acceptable?"
