Tiki doesn't believe Pete Alonso 'has a clue' about what needs fixing at the plate: 'I feel for him'
Pete Alonso went viral on Monday evening for comments made before the Mets season opener against the Cardinals, when the pending free agent was asked what could be behind his underwhelming contract season.
"I'm on pace for close to 40 homers, I was an All-Star this year, so I think to beat myself up or be frustrated, it's really no use," Alonso said. "I'm really excited for the end of the year where we get to play winning baseball. I'm happy with what I've accomplished this year so far, and I think there's definitely going to be some opportunities that I look forward to capitalizing on."
Reacting instantly on Evan and Tiki, Tiki didn't take issue with the perspective of trusting yourself and your track record, but at some point, there has to be an admission that something is not working, and a change is needed somewhere.
"He's got the right attitude and the right mindset," Tiki said. "You can't let it take over your preparation and performance…but you might have to be proactive in changing something…the lack of production - can you imagine, if he was just having an average season for him, how good this Mets team would be? If he was also footing the bill and clutch in moments that he needed to be. This Mets lineup would be so dangerous."
As for where that change is needed, Tiki says Alonso himself may not be sure.
"I feel for Pete. I feel bad for him," Tiki said. "I don't think he knows why he isn't producing. Some guys, there's something wrong with the approach or there's a hitch in his swing. I don't think he has a clue what's wrong."
