The Mets have fallen right back down to .500 to follow up what was a once-promising sweep of the Phillies last week, but instead of that being a launching point, it seems like another false blip on the radar.
Boomer says enough is enough, and it's time for the front office to start holding players accountable, starting with one of their struggling stars.
"It's time to make some people uncomfortable," Boomer said. "It's not okay to just keep showing up and have a middling season. that's not what you're spending $350 million on. Even when you look at the last four, five, or six pitching outings, these are games you should have won. They're not doing enough offensively, and arguably, the biggest culprit is the shortstop.
"Lindor feels like the end of A-Rod. Are they gonna drop him to the bottom of the lineup eventually? Would that happen, and how is he gonna feel about it? When I talk about making people uncomfortable, that's what you do. It's unfortunate you have to embarrass an athlete sometimes…and I'm not saying he doesn't work hard and isn't a good person on the team, but he is obviously struggling. So drop him in the lineup, get rid of Vogelbach."
Boomer understands Lindor and other high-paid stars are going to remain in the lineup every day, but changes have to be made outside of that to wake the team up, and the front office needs to send a message to the team that its current performance isn't nearly good enough.
"Sooner or later, you gotta start making people feel uncomfortable," Boomer said. "That it's not OK. Your owner is spending $350 million on your roster, and guys are just not getting it done. The guys around the fringes of the team…Daniel Vogelbach, I don't know what it is. You're supposed to hit. That's what you're there for. There are certain guys that are not carrying their weight.
"Sooner or later, the owner has to go to the general manager and say 'You gotta do something to start making some of these guys feel uncomfortable.'"
