Gio and Sal: Why it is 'absolutely critical' for Mets to win NL East

With a Mets loss and a Braves win on Tuesday, New York's lead in the NL East is down to 2.5 games.

Gio and Sal agree that it is absolutely crucial for the Mets to hang onto first place to avoid an October gauntlet.

Now that the Padres are stacked with Juan Soto and Josh Bell, and the defending champion Braves added more pieces at the deadline, the Mets have stiff competition in the National League, and they need to do whatever they can to avoid a three-game Wild Card Series and try to limit their matchups with those NL juggernauts.

"If they win the division and finish in the second seed, you would avoid the Braves, Padres, and Dodgers until the NLCS," Sal said. You only have to face one of those teams.

"There is no easy path in the postseason…but still, you don't want to go through that gauntlet. You'd rather take the easier path."

As it stands now, the Mets would play the winner of the Phillies and Brewers in the Wild Card series, then face off against one of the Dodgers, Padres, or Braves. So, winning the division means only having to play one of those three top squads, meaning these next two months will be of the utmost importance for the team's World Series chances.

"Critical," Gio said. "It's absolutely critical that they win the division."
