The Rangers could use a couple upgrades to solidify their spot as one of the true contenders in the NHL this season. Could the Canadiens provide some help prior to the trade deadline?
According to TSN’s NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, Montreal could be motivated to make a deal given the team’s fondness for some of New York’s prospects.
Per LeBrun, the Canadiens “covet some of the Rangers prospects,” while the Habs have some options to fill some of the Blueshirts’ needs. One of those options could be defenseman Ben Chiarot, who was nearly traded to the Flames and is currently on IR with a lower-body injury. The 30-year-old is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, but the reported asking price for a rental like Chiarot is still a first-round pick and another prospect.
Multiple reports have linked New York and Montreal as potential trade partners, and with former Rangers GM Jeff Gorton currently working as the Habs’ president of hockey operations, he would certainly have some knowledge of the Rangers’ prospect pool.
