Boomer & Gio: Gerard Gallant lost Rangers job after being outcoached in playoff loss to Devils

Gerard Gallant and the Rangers mutually agreed to part ways this past weekend, as the team announced it, but Boomer wasn’t buying that at all.

Boomer believes Gallant was canned after it looked like the rival Devils wanted it more in the Blueshirts’ first round exit.

“No, this was an all-in year,” Boomer said. “Whatever happened, it’s amazing just how the Rangers will absolutely cut bait immediately.

“To have that game seven and there was a no-show, and have some of your best guys have their worst games of the season…after back-to-back 100-point seasons, you think ‘He’s great, he’s here to stay.’ Maybe in Detroit, maybe in Colorado, not here. They went all in, and they got knocked out in the first round. Gallant tried to explain all that, and I guarantee you it fell on deaf ears.”

Both Boomer and Gio expressed an expectation that Gallant would be fired when reacting to New York’s game seven loss to New Jersey, and with Gallant seemingly getting outcoached by Lindy Ruff after the front office went all in at the trade deadline, it seemed like an exit was imminent.

“I think, to me, it’s more Chris Drury having a real problem with a coach who was unable to make adjustments,” Boomer said. “After a coach who had just been on the staff outcoached him.”
