Sal: Rangers series loss wasn't Gerard Gallant's fault, but wouldn't be shocked if he's fired

After the Rangers were overpowered in game seven against the Devils on Monday night, a caller pondered with Sal Licata whether Gerard Gallant was going to be the team’s latest head coaching casualty.

Sal doesn’t believe the series loss falls on Gallant, but at this point, nobody outside of Igor Shesterkin is safe.

“I love Gallant, I love everything he says, but something happened,” Sal said. “If his message isn’t getting through, if he’s turned guys off, I think there’s a chance that is the case. We’re gonna find out in the coming days. I wouldn’t be shocked if the Rangers make a change. I don’t think it was his fault.

“But after watching this team play, it’s a possibility.”

Sal wouldn’t can Gallant if he were running things, but he also wouldn’t fault Chris Drury and company if they decide to move on, especially given how the series ended after looking so dominant through the first two games.

“It’s two years in a row where they fell short of the postseason,” Sal said. “Last year they had a great run. This year, unacceptable. We know they have the goalie in place. Everything else needs to be evaluated.

“[The Devils] were toast! The Rangers had them!”
