Greg Schiano now winningest head coach in Rutgers football history, but 'That's not what it's about'

There is a new head coach atop the Rutgers football record books.

Greg Schiano, back for his second tenure with the Scarlet Knights after a memorable first journey in Piscataway, saw his defense dig deep and hold a narrow 16-14 win over Temple on Saturday to give Schiano his 79th career win with Rutgers.

The win was Schiano's 79th win as Scarlet Knights head coach, passing Frank Burns for the most in program history.

More importantly for Schiano, it moved his current Rutgers squad to a 3-0 start on the season for the second year in a row.

"Quite honestly, that's not what it's about," Schiano said after the win in Philadelphia. "It's about watching these kids develop and build something special for the state of New Jersey.

"We're gonna do that. We're on our way, we just gotta keep rolling."

The win almost didn't happen, as the heavily-favored Scarlet Knights failed to score an offensive touchdown, but in trademark Schiano fashion, a stout defense did the job and ensured Rutgers would remain unbeaten heading into conference play against Iowa next weekend.

"We call it "chop," and they did it," Schiano said. "They chopped right to the end."
