Brandon Tierney really isn't liking what he's seeing from Aroldis Chapman of late, especially after he allowed three hits and a run in a near disaster against the lowly Orioles on Tuesday night.
"Despite the perfect 9-for-9 hollow, empty save stat," Tierney said during Wednesday's show. "He's a mess."
Chapman has allowed an earned run in four straight appearances, raising his season ERA to 2.63.
Meanwhile, across town, Edwin Diaz has settled in and is pitching to a 1.69 ERA after a nightmare start to his Mets tenure.
With that in mind, Tierney says that he would rather have Diaz on the bump in the ninth inning of a close game, at least right now.
"There is not a single Yankee fan on the planet that wants that guy on the mound," Tierney said of Chapman. "I'd rather have Diaz. Diaz is far more reliable to me than Chapman is this year."
Still, Tierney doesn't expect Aaron Boone to make a change at closer, at least not yet.
"I'm not pressuring Boone to yank him now," Tierney said. "There's no need to. Let's see where [Clay] Holmes goes, let's see where [Michael] King goes, let's see if [Jonathan] Loaisiga rediscovers himself…I still think he can recover."
