Evan: Aaron Boone not considering walking Shohei Ohtani is managerial 'malpractice'

Aaron Boone shot down the idea of intentionally walking Shohei Ohtani in the eighth inning of Monday’s loss to the Angels, and Evan had a big problem with Boone’s response.

Evan would have been fine with Boone acknowledging that putting Ohtani on base as the tying run would have been an option, but to emphatically dismiss the idea borders on “malpractice.”

“Where’s the logic? There’s no logic,” Evan said. “If Aaron Boone would have said ‘It’s a good question, I debated it and went back and forth, and here is why.’ To me, we can still argue it, but I’d move on from him saying no 15 times as if it’s a dumb question, as if we’re a bunch of schmucks for suggesting that you do essentially what you did two innings earlier, and walk the best player on the planet.

“The ‘No’ of disgust like he didn’t even consider it…for this manager to act like it was never considered, and he never would think about it, is almost malpractice. You didn’t consider walking the best player on the planet?”

The decision to pitch to Ohtani backfired tremendously, as Ohtani blasted a Michael King fastball in the left center field seats for his 35th home run of the season, tying the game and setting up a 4-3 win for the Angels in 10 innings, sending the Yanks to their seventh loss in their last nine games.
