On the latest episode of Talkin’ Yanks, Aaron Boone was asked about having a sense of urgency with his bullpen usage at a time where the Yankees badly need wins without Aaron Judge, but Boone emphatically defended his effort to not overwork his relief arms during a long season.
“The reality is, [Wandy] Peralta, [Clay] Holmes, and maybe [Jimmy] Cordero led the league in appearances in the month of May, and are off to similar starts in June,” Boone said. “Stop. They’re not pitching four out of five just because you really feel like this one is needed.”
The Yankees have dropped several close games in recent weeks, magnifying Boone’s bullpen maneuvers during that span. But Boone says it’s important to make sure his most reliable relievers aren’t worn down by the end of the season, which is still months away.
“You’re chasing your tail, and you’re gonna end up with broken guys in the second half of the season,” Boone said. “We gotta lean on everyone. It’s hard when you’re going through two weeks of not scoring a lot and are in one-run games every day. The reality is, everyone’s gotta take a little bit of the load, guys.”
