Andrew Benintendi will indeed have surgery on Tuesday to repair the fractured hook of the hamate bone in his right wrist, but the Yankees are still optimistic he can return this season despite there being just 30 days left in the regular season.

“Everyone is different, every surgery is different, it depends on how the healing goes,” manager Aaron Boone said after Monday’s Yankees win over Minnesota.

Boone relayed that he had the exact same surgery back in 2001, and indeed, he missed 30 days due to the surgery – meaning the same timeline for Benintendi would put him back right around the end of the regular season.

Benintendi had a similar injury and surgery in his college days, and as Jeff Nelson noted on the YES postgame show, with the Yankees pretty much locked into a Top 2 seed, they wouldn’t begin the playoffs until October 10 or 11, meaning Benintendi could return in early October and perhaps get some at-bats in the final few games of the regular season, or in simulated games, as the minor-league postseasons will already be over.
