The Yankees could certainly use Luis Castillo, who showed his worth by tossing seven two-hit innings against the Bombers on Thursday night, but could the team’s longstanding hair policy get in the way of bolstering the rotation?
The Yankees’ well-known hair policy is back in the discussion considering Castillo’s obvious fit in the New York rotation, but his dreadlocks do not fit in the team’s regulations forbidding long hair and beards.
One of Castillo’s teammates after his impressive outing in the Bronx said the All-Star righty “definitely” wouldn’t want to cut his hair if he was put in that situation.
“I keep telling him, ‘Hey man, they’re going to make you cut your hair if you come here,’” Reds shortstop Kyle Farmer said, via The Athletic. “He definitely doesn’t want to do it. There’s a lot of attitude in the hair, and I don’t think he wants to let it go.”
Castillo wouldn’t reveal how he felt about it, but did say he would do what he must if the situation arose.
“Those are the decisions that are done by the team,” Castillo said. “If it gets to the point where I have to cut my hair, I will.”
Former Mets reliever Miguel Castro had to cut off his dreadlocks when he was dealt to the Yanks this past offseason, and, most famously (or infamously), Darnell McDonald was picked up by the Yankees, cut off his long dreadlocks, and was let go after just four at-bats. Many argue against the policy that they say is outdated, but so far, it doesn’t seem like the rule is going anywhere.
