Aaron Boone benched the struggling Anthony Rizzo for Sunday’s series finale against the Dodgers, and hinted that his time on the bench could be longer as the Yankees try to give the veteran first baseman a break.
But if Rizzo can’t find his way out of the slump that has plagued him since his concussion in May of last season, Boomer and Gio aren’t sure what the Yankees can do with the former World Series champion.
“What do you do with Anthony Rizzo at this point?” Gio said. “If he’s not a first baseman or a DH, he is just occupying a roster spot for no reason.”
Boomer says the Yanks don’t have much to be concerned with as they continue to thrive as one of the best teams in baseball, but when it comes to Rizzo, a tough choice may have to be made soon.
“This has to be significant concern for Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman,” Boomer said. “It’s feeble. It’s like when Jeff McNeil was going through this. They can’t get out of their own way.
“With the guys in the lineup around him, he should be getting more pitches to hit…he’s got to come out of it eventually.”
