Boomer spent part of his vacation talking to experts about Aaron Judge’s toe injury, and while he believes the reigning MVP will be back soon, he isn’t sure if Judge will be able to be the same player, even in the long term.
“He’s gonna come back in the second half, and he’s gonna try to give it a go,” Boomer said. “This is a really serious injury for a guy of his size. It is really serious, and it’s his back foot. I’ve talked to a number of people about this…this is an extremely serious injury where he may never be the same again.
“Do you remember when Derek Jeter broke his ankle? He was never the same again. and Judge is a big, big man. I had to deal with turf toe in my career, there is nothing worse. Between that and plantar fasciitis. It just absolutely screws you up.”
The Yankees clearly need Judge to be successful, as the offense has devolved into one of the worst in baseball since he injured his right big toe, but Boomer doesn’t see Judge being the same player he was before the injury, not for the rest of this season or beyond.
“This thing is significant, man, and he’s just not gonna be the same player,” Boomer said. “That toe is gonna be in the back of his mind all the time.
“I hate to be the bearer of bad news…as a former athlete who has played hurt, you’re just not the same person.”
