Boomer: Yankees deserve more credit for being over .500 despite key injuries

The Yankees fell to 4.5 games back of a playoff spot on Sunday, their largest deficit of the season.

Still, Boomer was taking an optimistic approach when assessing the team on Monday morning.

“They played 112 games. How in the hell are they over .500?” Boomer said. “He’s made six starts and now is most likely going to go back on the IL. Giancarlo Stanton has played 62 of 112 games, and in those 652 games, how good has he been?

“You have 4/5 of the starting rotation for the Yankees that have been in a state of flux the entire year.”

Boomer listed other key absences, such as Aaron Judge, Nestor Cortes, Josh Donaldson, and the awful play of Aaron Hicks in the beginning of the season. Despite all of those injuries and variables, the Yankees still have a shot at the playoffs, and Boomer says that should be recognized.

“It’s amazing. I know everyone wants to scream and yell, but when you talk about injuries and players who have missed games…I don’t know how many other teams have had more missed games from core players as the Yankees have,” Boomer said.

“I know there are some Yankees out there that can be vicious…but it’s unbelievable how many games their core players have missed, and how 4/5 of their starting rotation is in shambles.”
