(670 The Score) After spending the past two seasons with right-hander Jameson Taillon, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman knows the Cubs “got a good one” when they added Taillon on a four-year, $68-million deal in free agency earlier this offseason.
Taillon, 31, was 14-5 with a 3.91 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 177 1/3 innings across 32 starts for the Yankees in 2022. He pitched to contact often in striking out just 7.7 batters per nine innings, but he kept his free passes to a minimum, walking just 1.6 batters per nine innings this past season.
“He’s a gamer,” Cashman said on Inside the Clubhouse on 670 The Score on Saturday morning. “He gives you innings. He’s a tremendous teammate. I think he’s going to be a really valuable, solid piece for the Cubs as they move forward. He’s going to be someone we miss. He’s a winner too. So at the end of the day, the Cubs got a good one there.”
Taillon posted a 4.08 ERA in 61 starts across two years in New York. He agreed to a deal with the Cubs in early December, while the Yankees pivoted and signed lefty ace Carlos Rodon shortly thereafter on a six-year, $162-million deal. Taillon projects to fill a spot near the top of the Cubs' rotation.
