Chris McMonigle believes many Yankee fans have been “too angry” in recent years, given the team’s consistent playoff appearances and winning records, but he also doesn’t want to hear about the “mystique” and “aura” of the Yankee franchise, considering it hasn’t been part of the team’s identity for a long time.
“Since 1964, the Yankees have been “special” for six years,” C-Mac said. “There was a six-year window, from 1996-2001, if you want to throw in 2003, but to me, it ended in 2001. Then they went on to lose for a while. It’s been a long time, and before that, it was a long time. There were long stretches, with George Steinbrenner as owner, by the way.
“I keep hearing about a “once-proud franchise.” They’ve never had losing seasons before? Don Mattingly’s entire career was in seasons like this!”
The Yankees had a magical run in the late 70s and late 90s, but aside from that, they haven’t been the staple of sustained championship dominance that they were for the first 60 years of their existence. In fact, the Yanks have won seven titles since 1962 after winning 20 from 1923-62. So, after winning 20 in 39 years, the Yankees have won seven in the last 60. That isn’t much better than the Cardinals, who have won five since 1962, the Red Sox, who have won four, the A’s (four), or the Dodgers (five).
In between the Yankees’ titles have been some putrid stretches, including the late 1960s and the early 1990s. No question, the Yanks have been consistent contenders over the last 30 years, never enduring more than one bad season, but C-Mac says it’s no longer accurate to consider the franchise a God among mortals.
“This year is ugly, but we act like it’s never happened,” C-Mac said. “But it’s amazing we’ve gone 30 years without this ugly of a season.”
