DJ LeMahieu finally has some clarity on the hip/groin issue that has been plaguing him for weeks, as Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Saturday that the veteran infielder has a sports hernia.
The hernia will require surgery in the offseason, but for now, LeMahieu was given a cortisone shot and will play through it the rest of the season, though he is not in Saturday’s starting lineup.
“He essentially has a sports hernia that he’s gonna have to take care of after the season,” Boone said. “He had an injection for it yesterday, so obviously wasn’t available yesterday. We’ll see his availability today in an emergency situation, but hopefully, potentially back in there [Sunday].”
Boone said he does expect LeMahieu to play again this season, after he was removed from Thursday’s game with recurring hip soreness. Andrew Velazquez was called up to get the start at shortstop to make up for LeMahieu’s loss, one that Boone hopes doesn’t last much longer.

“We’ll see as the game gets going, as he gets moving around a little, what kind of potential option he would be,” Boone said.
