Evan says any Yankee fans hoping for the team to go on a run and find a way into the playoffs, as the team seemingly always has over the years, is in for a rude awakening.
Because, if you look closely, this team is nothing like the Yankees of the recent past.
“Here’s what you find out: They’re not the Yankees,” Evan said. “There’s nothing about them that reminds you of those teams that get the benefit of the doubt of finding a way to crawl back into this thing.
“If we deal with the reality of losing this series to the Marlins, when you have game three in the bag, the reality of losing a series to the crappy White Sox, when you factor all of this in that we’ve witnessed in the last few weeks and months…these aren’t those Yankees. They’re not going to find a way.”
Evan says the Yankees themselves know this, and have now begun pivoting to getting fans in the stands with other methods now that the team is poised for meaningless baseball in September.
“I’ve got concrete evidence that Hal Steinbrenner, in the last 48 hours, has said, ‘Oh crap, we’re screwed. I got nothing left. You know what I gotta do? I gotta play the Jeter card,’” Evan said.
“He decided to desperately beg Derek Jeter to come to Old Timer’s Day…that’s a deflection. That’s like the Mets saying, ‘Let’s have Bartolo Colon Night.’”
