Gleyber Torres in starting lineup, Gary Sanchez has night off after getting 'beat up' behind the plate

After leaving Thursday night’s game with lower back stiffness, Gleyber Torres is back in the Yankee lineup and batting third for Friday night’s series opener against the A’s.

“Gleyber’s good, he felt good last night actually, and speaking to him this morning, he felt ready to go,” Aaron Boone said. “So I think we’re good there.”

Torres has just one hit in his last 18 at-bats after heating up last week in a series against the Twins.

Gary Sanchez has been red-hot since the Twins series, batting .321 with a 1.131 OPS and four home runs in that span, but the catcher is out of Friday’s lineup after taking a number of hits behind the plate, including taking a ball off the leg that he fought off to stay in the game on Thursday. Boone expects Sanchez back in the lineup on Saturday.

“He’s good,” Boone said. “He got beat up a little bit in last night’s game, a long game, and with us not getting home until three in the morning or whatever, and having a day game tomorrow, having him down one of these games, I just felt like this was the one to do it.”
