Gleyber Torres told reporters on Wednesday that he has been off social media since the start of this offseason, as he didn’t want to keep seeing his name involved in trade rumors.
“The last time I checked social media, there were too many rumors, too many things,” Torres said, via MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. “So I'm just enjoying my little baby, preparing myself, coming here and doing my thing.”
Torres’ name came up in trade rumors involving the Marlins, and as his production has dipped since his All-Star 2019 campaign, the Yankees may no longer be sold on the former top prospect’s outlook as a long-term contributor to the team.
Torres said he hopes to at least finish the next two seasons out with the Yanks, but understands “it’s a business.” As for the Yankees, specifically manager Aaron Boone, the plan is for Torres to start the season as the everyday second baseman.
“Yeah, but obviously, we have a lot of infielders,” Boone said. “We had a similar situation last year with DJ being that piece that you kind of move around…but yeah, I expect him to be in a regular, everyday role.”
Torres was considered an All-Star candidate in the first half of the season before drastically falling off in the second half of the season, but overall, Boone was encouraged with what he saw.
“I think in a lot of ways, he had a really good, strong year last year…he had some ups and downs, but on a balance, had a really strong year for us on both sides of the ball,” Boone said. “We’ve got a guy who has a ton of experience, has had a lot of success, has had some bumps along the way too, but is still a really young man.
“I expect him to be hopefully a really impactful player in the middle of our lineup, continue to build off what was a strong season last year on the whole.”
