MLB teams had just three weeks after the 2021 MLB Draft to sign their picks, so things will ove quickly – and indeed, it seems the Yankees have landed their biggest fish already.
According to Audacy MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Yankees and No. 20 overall pick Trey Sweeney have reached a deal with a bonus worth $3 million, slightly under the slot value of $3.243 million for that pick.
Sweeney slashed .328/.437/.517 in 117 games as a shortstop as Eastern Illinois, and could be moved directly to Low-A Tampa after the Yankees promoted their 2019 first-rounder, Anthony Volpe, to High-A Hudson Valley last week.
According to multiple reports, the Yankees have either already also signed or seen the player agree to sign with 11 other draft picks, including second-rounder RHP Brendan Beck for $1.05 million (below his $1.307 million slot value). So far, only Dominic Keegan, their 19th-round pick, has already stated he will not sign, instead choosing to return to Vanderbilt.
