Keith McPherson wanted to see Gleyber Torres traded, but as he tears it up in August while the majority of the lineup struggles, can the Yankees afford to let him go?
Keith isn’t so sure anymore.
“The Yankees have to contend early next year,” Keith said. “They have to come out of the gate hot…you can’t remove the second-best hitter on the team.
“There’s Judge, and there’s Gleyber. That’s the offense. You can’t do it. You can’t trade him away in the offseason. Where do you replace his production? Peraza? No. DJ? No. Volpe? No…there is only one Gleyber Torres on this team. He plays one position, and he plays every day.”
Keith has been vocal about his frustration with Torres’ mental miscues in the field and on the bases, but the Yankees can’t afford to punt in 2024, and they will need established veteran hitters in the lineup next season. Right now, Torres is one of the only internal options that fit the mold.
“This is a guy that wants to stay,” Keith said. “If you can’t tell Gleyber Torres wants to stay with the Yankees…he’s trying out for next year. He’s trying to not get traded.
“I am praying this guy wakes up and locks in. Why can’t there just be one version of you, Gleyber?”
