Luis Severino is eligible to come off the injured list on Monday, and the Yankees have a decision to make: give him one more rehab start in the Minors, or activate him and let him finish building back up at the MLB level.
Monday is an off-day organization-wide so his next outing will be Tuesday either way, but after throwing four innings and 5 pitches for Double-A Somerset Wednesday night, Sevy feels like he’s ready to get back to the Bronx.
“I feel really strong, no worry (about the injury) at all. I feel pretty good and ready to go,” he told reporters at Dunkin’ Donuts Park in Hartford after his start. “I’m heading back to New York tomorrow and we’ll see what’s next.”
Sevy got a nice ovation from the fans in Hartford – the Yard Goats are a Rockies affiliate, but surely a lot of Bombers fans from Connecticut made the trek up to see him – and allowed a single, a homer, and two more singles in the first inning, but breezed the rest of the way, retiring his final 10 in a row.
“He got a good swing (on the homer), but after that, my fastball command was good, and I felt happy with all my other pitches,” he said. “The first inning was getting comfortable on the mound, but after that I felt really good. Adrenaline was flowing.”
Severino hit 99 and even 101 on the gun, which he didn’t know about until he was told – and he joked that he “got a little mad” after that first inning and ramped it up. He also joked he’d check the gun to make sure it was truly that high, but even if not, he felt comfortable with his velocity.
“The last outing was like 96, don’t know what it was tonight but I know it was higher – and even if it wasn’t (99 or 101), I felt my fastball was pretty good,” Sevy said.
The decision will come soon, but if Severino had his druthers, his next outing – even if it’s only five or so innings and 60 or so pitches on a buildup limit – would be next week on the Yankees’ road trip to Boston and Milwaukee, and not in Scranton or Somerset.
“I feel ready, so hopefully, (New York),” he smiled.
