Morash says trading for Juan Soto without signing him to an extension would be a failure for the Yankees, even if they final end their World Series drought in 2024.
But Morash doesn’t believe Soto will be a true rental, and says moves that haven’t been made since the trade suggest that the Yanks are prioritizing locking up their new star to a big extension.
“Not getting [Josh] Hader, not making this trade for [Corbin] Burnes with the expectation that you wold have to sign him next offseason, has told us and should send us all a message,” Morash said. “The Yankees are all in to an extent, but they’re really all in on building a sustained nucleus of Soto and Judge, not just for this year.
“In the back of their head, they know this is more about just one year, and we need to position ourselves financially to keep Soto, and in the meantime, do enough where I think we should be able to do enough to win a World Series this year without going crazy.”
