With Gerrit Cole out for at least the next 1-2 months, Sal says the Yankees have lost their most irreplaceable player, which means there’s no need for an all-in pivot.
The harsh reality is, the Yanks aren’t making a title run without their ace at his best.
“No matter what, the Yankees season is compromised,” Sal said. “They are not going to win a World Series if Gerrit Cole is not 100 percent the ace he was a year ago. So I’m not going out there and being nuts.
“I think that’s the right move…I’m not even going nuts about Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery. I’m waiting to find out definitely what the deal is with Gerrit Cole, maybe reevaluate things at the deadline.”
Sal didn’t feel like the Yankees truly went all in this winter anyway, so now that Cole is out for the foreseeable future, there is no reason to overspend or part with prospects to try and weather the injury.
“I don’t see an urgency right now with this Yankees team because of the injury to Gerrit Cole,” Sal said.
“It is no longer to me an all-in season for the Yankees….they almost go all in, and now, with Gerrit Cole being compromised, at the very least for the first two months of the season, it can no longer be an all-in season for the Yankees.”
