Report: Yankees to call up Trey Amburgey ahead of Red Sox series

Erik Kratz can rejoice, as Yankees prospect Trey Amburgey is reportedly being called up ahead of the Yankees’ four-game set with the Red Sox, which gets underway Thursday night.

According to Eli Fishman, who recently broke the news of Jasson Dominguez’s promotion, the Yanks are promoting Amburgey, who is not on the 40-man roster, in a move that many Yankee fans have been hoping for since the outfielder began a streak of reaching base in 42 straight games, a run that came to an end this past weekend. Amburgey is hitting .312 with seven home runs in 38 games with Triple-A Scranton.

The Yanks could use outfield help, with Clint Frazier on the IL with vertigo and Miguel Andujar is on the IL as well with a sprained wrist. Brett Gardner has been forced to play a more regular role and has struggled badly, batting .194 on the season.

The Yankees haven’t confirmed the move, and would have to have a corresponding move prior to Thursday’s series opener with Boston, but there is conflicting reports about Ambrugey’s promotion, specifically from a RailRiders beat reporter.
