Sal: Yankees lineup, bullpen show glaring concerns in 'as bad an early-season loss you can have'

Sal Licata says the Yankees’ loss to the Twins on Friday was “as bad an early-season loss” that the Bombers could possibly have.

Losing an eighth inning lead to the Twins, who the Yanks typically destroy on an annual basis, showed some glaring holes that should have fans questioning what this team’s ceiling really is, especially when it comes to the bullpen.

“They got a bunch of arms back there, but which ones do you truly trust?” Sal said. “Clay Holmes at times looks lights out, and at times just looks ‘eh.’”

Holmes allowed two runs in the eighth, while the offense blasted three solo home runs, but nothing else, which is another area of concern that Sal says Yankee fans should have, even if DJ LeMahieu and Harrison Bader are back.

“It’s all or nothing,” Sal said. “There are too many outs in that Yankees bottom of the order.”

Sal isn’t anticipating disaster, but it’s hard to look at the 2023 Yankees and imagine a finish any better than last season, when they were outclassed by the Astros in the ALCS.

“You don’t want to overreact, and we’re not gonna do it,” Sal said. “The Yankees are gonna win 90-plus games and be in the playoffs…but you can’t tell me you look at this team and see a World Series team.”
