With Giancarlo Stanton and Josh Donaldson both likely rejoining the Yankees in Los Angeles for this weekend’s series against the Dodgers, there will have to be two roster casualties to make room for the injured veterans.
Franchy Cordero seems like an obvious candidate, and, according to Jack Curry of the YES Network, the struggling youngster Oswaldo Cabrera will be another.
Cabrera, who has one of the worst OPS marks in the league among qualified hitters, will reportedly be optioned to Triple-A in an attempt to figure out his swing and get back on track. After injecting some needed youthful energy into the Bombers down the stretch of the 2022 season, while providing valuable defensive versatility, Cabrera holds a lowly .538 OPS on the season after a respectable .740 finish in 171 plate appearances last season.
Despite the likely looming demotion, Cabrera is taking it all in stride, as he explained to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.
“When I know I’m struggling, you have to be grateful,” Cabrera told Kirschner. “Look around right now, you see how many seats are in this stadium? All of these people come to watch us play…I’m grateful for this. Not everyone has this chance.”
