The Yankees typically celebrate a win with an almost disco scene in the clubhouse, equipped with smoke machines and loud music, but even after a 7-6 win marked the team’s first victory out of the break and snapped a two-game skid, the Bombers weren’t in a celebratory mood.
Not after likely losing one of their most valuable bullpen arms in Michael King for the rest of the season.
“It’s tough to watch,” Jameson Taillon said. “Definitely thinking about him. It was kind of a somber mood in here after the game. But he’s a hard worker. I know he’ll get back here and get to the same spot he was in. But it’s never easy seeing a guy walk off the field and thinking about his girlfriend or family watching. That’s never easy for anyone to see. So it’s tough.”
King had to leave the game right after throwing a pitch in the eighth inning, leading many to fear the worst. While it appears Tommy John surgery has been avoided, King’s elbow injury likely means he is lost for the rest of 2022, which was a career year for the righty up to this point.
“He obviously means so much to this team,” Aaron Boone said. “Our thoughts and our minds and our prayers are with him.”
