Tierney goes to bat for Aaron Boone: 'The guy has been given one ace and a bunch of guys who are injury prone'

A caller phoned in to Tiki and Tierney on Tuesday afternoon to vent his frustrations about Aaron Boone, and Tierney wasn’t having any of it.

Tierney went to bat for the Yankee manager, who has received plenty of criticism in recent years after back-to-back 100-win seasons to begin his tenure, but Tierney says that any criticism geared towards Boone should be redirected towards the front office that has failed to provide him with a championship-caliber roster.

“What year do you think Aaron Boone truly underachieved in his first four years with the Yankees?” Tierney said. “Tell me the year that you think Aaron Boone so woefully underachieved and left a championship-title team short of a championship. You can’t do it, and anything else is wrong.”

Boone has been to the playoffs in each of his four seasons as manager, but the Yankees have carried World Series expectations since he took over following the memorable 2017 season. He came the closest in 2019, losing on a walk-off home run in game six of the ALCS after leading a historically injury-riddled roster to 103 victories. But the thoughts on Boone have largely soured among the fanbase, with many wanting a change after the team’s early playoff exit last season. But Boone is back on a new deal, and Tierney says it’s the right move.

“I’m not saying he’s Billy Martin, but Aaron Boone is a good manager,” Tierney said. “We’ve got issues with [Brian] Cashman? You know I do. Issues with Hal [Steinbrenner]? You know I do. Issues with Boone? Not really.

“The guy has been given one ace, a bunch of guys who are injury prone, and a bunch of guys who can’t run. Two of the four years, he’s won 100 games. So don’t tell me that Aaron Boone is some stiff. Because he’s not. That’s not fair. That’s not accurate.”
