Gerrit Cole put up another dominant performance on Wednesday, shutting down the Phillies for just one run over 6.1 innings of work, striking out eight en route to a second win in as many starts to begin the 2023 season.
Cole has now allowed just one run over his first 12.1 innings of work to begin the year, coming off of a postseason in which he posted a 2.95 ERA over 18.1 innings.
For Tiki and Tierney, Wednesday’s start was further proof that Cole is currently the most reliable star in New York sports.
“If I asked you who is the most reliable in terms of consistency and performance, and merely showing up physically for their job and posting, who is that in New York?” BT asked. “It’s Gerrit Cole. He’s been amazing. Since 2018, he has 74 wins, which is the most in Major League Baseball. He’s the best pitcher in New York, he’s someone too many people take for granted, he’s made an All-Star a couple times as a Yankee…Gerrit Cole is an absolute horse.
“He takes the ball without any doubt…we take him for granted, and we sometimes do that with certain players. It’s time that if you’re still taking him for granted, you stop. He’s in the middle of his prime, and he’s absolutely outstanding.”
BT wasn’t getting any argument from Tiki, who sang the praises of Cole after he led the league in starts last season and looks to be on his way to another consistent season in pinstripes.
“By and large, the appreciation for Gerrit Cole, it’s real,” Tiki said. “When you look over his history with the Yankees, it’s year four now, he’s one of the best pitchers in baseball.”
