Joey Gallo is once again out of the Yankees’ starting lineup on Tuesday due to groin tightness, but Aaron Boone says the struggling lefty slugger is an option off the bench if need be.
“Last night he was an emergency option,” Boone said Tuesday, via Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. “I'm hoping and expecting that he'll be an option for me tonight.”
Gallo left Saturday’s win over the Royals due to tightness in his left groin, and hasn’t made an appearance since. On Monday, Boone had said he didn’t rule out playing Gallo in Toronto, even with turf concerns given his injury. In Monday’s win, Aaron Judge played in center, Giancarlo Stanton in right, and Aaron Hicks in left.
Gallo is batting just .180 on the year with two home runs and a .570 OPS, though two had come in his last five games, batting .308 over that short span.
“I know he's feeling pretty good,” Boone said. “In talking to him last night, he wanted to be in there today.”
