Josh Donaldson is currently on the COVID IL, but whenever he returns, he will have to serve a one-game suspension if his appeal is rejected.

Aaron Boone said after Saturday’s incident, when Donaldson’s “Hey Jackie” comments led to the benches clearing and heavy criticism from the White Sox clubhouse, that he would have to look into it himself, but on Monday, he said he didn’t believe the suspension was fitting for the action.

“I certainly respect MLB’s [process], I think they were thoughtful and looked into it and did their due diligence on it and made what was a tough call,” Boone said after Monday’s loss to the Orioles.

“I don’t agree with it. I don't think it warranted a suspension, but I certainly respect their process.”

Boone said he and multiple members of the organization had spoken with representatives from Major League Baseball in the days following the incident, but Boone’s discussions happened shortly after it occurred, when the league was beginning an investigation, so he had little idea as to what exactly the league was planning in terms of discipline for Donaldson.

“When I talked to him, because it was fresh after the game, it was mainly, ‘We’ll launch an investigation after this and see what we come up with.’” Boone said.
